Global Catalog

Global Catalog - Place global catalog servers at all locations that contain more than 100 users to reduce congestion of network wan links and to prevent productivity loss in case of wan link failure. To locate objects outside its domain is beyond its scope. The global catalog is a namespace that contains directory data for all domains in a forest. The global catalog (gc) is an integral component of windows active directory (ad) that serves as a central repository containing a subset of attributes of all objects in the ad forest. A dc in an active directory (ad) network stores full information only related to the domain it is in. It contains an entry for every object in the enterprise forest, but does not contain all. Hence, there is a need for a server called a global catalog server. The global catalog (gc) allows users and applications to find objects in an active directory domain tree, given one or more attributes of the target object. The global catalog contains a partial representation of all objects in the entire forest. The global catalog makes the directory structure within a forest transparent to users who perform a search.
